Springtime in Seattle is serious business. The sun visits us for a little bit longer each day and sometimes even peeks out from behind the clouds. The cherry blossoms bloom and become a tourist attraction in their own right. Best of all is the promise of an imminent summer. It's this promise of summer that has influenced my choice of space for participation in the One Room Challenge.
You see, every year, summer comes to a crushing end, faster than it ever arrives. The clouds return, and the summer blooms wither. With that withering, I take down hanging baskets, empty and stack flower pots and store the furniture upon which we'd spent many a summer night. In essence, my front porch, the soul of our summer hangouts, barbecues and an outdoor work-with-a-glass-of-rose station, becomes a barren pass-through to the front door. This particular winter, it's been a storage place for dry wall and wood bought for interior projects, so it's been exceptionally beauty-free.
So now that summer is speeding my way again, daydreams of hours spent outside resurface, but the front porch is a princess in Cinderella rags. So I'll be giving it a makeover for the one room challenge, because it's the room we live in during the summer.
If you've been following me for a while, you may have seen my mini porch makeover last summer for my birthday barbecue AKA my bdaybq, yes, folks, I'm just that cheesy. I have one every damn year and that's what I call it on my invite, so sue me. All of my guests hangout on my front porch and in my front yard, and my husband gets his bubble machine going. Because we're on a busy street that's a walking thoroughfare through the neighborhood, it's fun to involve everyone who passes by. Kids chase the bubbles with delight and drivers look around to see where they came from. Last year my bdaybq was at the same time as a pub crawl, so I invited all of the passersby up for some tequila shots. All of this to say that our front porch is the heart and soul of a really good time, hence my choice to get it primed and ready for another season of fun!
What's the One Room Challenge? It's a challenge that takes place twice yearly with twenty featured designers and guest designers like me participating together over the course of six weeks with the big reveal happening on May 10.
I have a lot of DIY transformations up my sleeve along with tips & tricks for how to create comfort, balance and space for entertaining. I'll also be extending to the front yard, weather permitting, with some changes I've wanted to makes since we bought the house nearly three years ago.
The first thing we are starting with is power washing the front porch to get ready for this week's adventures! Thank goodness I have my trusty husband at the helm. He's my partner in crime and indulges so many of my design whimsies. I daresay you'll see him a lot over the next few weeks.
I'm excited to have you follow along here on my blog, but be sure also to follow along on Instagram posts and stories!
The fun starts now!
